About The Railway
Our Operation
The railway is operated and maintained by members of the Wakefield Society of Model and Experimental Engineers (SMEE) and operates on Sundays throughout the year. We currently operate a ground level 7 1/ 4" gauge track approximately 1/2 mile in length. All profits, after costs, are donated the Mayor of Wakefield's Charities
Current developements
We acquired the raised 5" / 3 1/2" gauge track from the Kirklees Light Railway at the end of 2018 and are currently in the process of relaying this within the confines of our existing site. This will allow us to operate the smaller scale model locomotives owned by a number of our members, and, hopefully, encourage more people to join us - especially younger! This track was previously owned and operated, by the Barnsley Model engineers Society, who were sadly forced to cease operations. We have subsequently welcomed a number of their former members, who are actively involved in installation.
